Using the Library

Full-time and part-time students are automatically enrolled in the library. Your purple smartcard (student card) doubles as your library card.

Staff members should use their staff ID card as their library card.

Students are entitled to borrow up to 10 items at a time, for a period of either 4 weeks or 1 week if the item is a short-term loan. Overnight loans are also available for some books.

Staff are entitled to borrow up to 20 items at one time, also for a period of either 4 weeks or 1 week if the item is a short-term loan.

Items can be renewed twice via your online library account, by phone, by email or in person. If any fines have accrued, these will have to be paid before any items can be renewed. If you are looking to renew for a third time, please bring the item back to the library for re-issuing.

Users can borrow items from both campus libraries and also return items to either campus. City of Glasgow College students and staff are also entitled to borrow up to 6 items from the libraries at Glasgow Clyde and Glasgow Kelvin Colleges as part of the Reciprocal Borrowing Programme. Please bring along your current student/staff ID and we'll create a Reciprocal Borrower library card for you. This will involve filling out a short application form.

Place a Hold

You can place a hold (reserve) on an item that is out on loan from either of the campus libraries, regardless of which campus you attend.

In order to place a hold on an item, the item must be out on loan - holds cannot be placed on an item that is currently on the shelves of either of the campus libraries. Holds can be placed on items via the library catalogue.

Alternatively, please ask at the library issue desk for assistance on placing a hold. You will be notified by email and/or text message as soon as your item is available for you to pick up.

To ensure that all users have a chance to borrow the library's resources, you will be charged a fine for any items that are returned late, damaged or lost.

The charges for items returned late are as follows:

1 week loan

10p per day (up to a max. of £2)

4 week loan

10p per day (up to a max. of £2)

1 day loan

50p per day (up to a max. of £5)

Please note these charges are per item, so if you have borrowed multiple items, fines can soon add up to a sizeable debt.

Remember, you can avoid unnecessary fines by renewing your items online or by contacting the library to renew them before they become overdue.

Charges will also be made for damaged or lost items so please look after the items you have borrowed.
